Ask any doctor about health tips for women, and they will guaranteed to tell you that vitamins and mineral supplements are essential for good health. But with the plethora of vitamins on the market that read much like the alphabet- literally from A- Zinc, how to know which ones are good for you?
In a perfect world, all of our nutrient needs would come from the best source: Food. However if your diet isn’t text book perfect then you need to make health care plans that ensure you fill in nutritional gaps in your diet. And there is the need why you should follow a health tips for women.
In your 20s and 30s
- Calcium – These are the decades to maintain your bone mass. You need 1,000 milligrams of calcium, daily. If you don’t receive enough calcium from your diet, you may need to take a supplement containing elemental calcium.
- Vitamin D – Most of us are severely lacking vitamin D nowadays because we stay out of the sun to protect our skin. Take at least 2,000 IU per day year-round.
- Folic Acid – Women in their childbearing age should supplement with 400 micrograms of Folic Acid per day, especially if you’re planning on conceiving anytime soon.
- Iron – Iron deficiency is also common in menstruating women, especially those who don’t make iron-fortified cereals, iron-rich vegetables and eggs a part of their regular diet. Look for a supplement containing 16 to 20 mg of Iron.
In your 40s
You need the same amount of Calcium, Vitamin D and Iron in your 40s. If you still desire to get pregnant in your 40s, bump up your Folic Acid intake to 600mcg daily.
In your 50s
This is the time to switch to multivitamins designed for adults 50 years and older. These multivitamins have significantly lesser iron than multivitamins designed for younger women, but have additional vitamin B12 to reflect changing nutrient needs. Also, bump your calcium intake to 1,500 mg. daily.
In your 60s and later
While the overall needs are similar to those in your 50s, talk to your health care provider to see if you need any additional supplements because of newer health issues such as eye health and heart disease. Also, make sure you get 2.4 micrograms of vitamin B12 daily.
