Being a new mom can be very exciting. This is the time you want to hold your baby, care for her, and spend as much time as you can with her so you two can start to bond right away. But, for new mom who had to undergo caesarean delivery to give birth to her baby, it is very important to also take good care of your own health. Recovering from C-section takes a little longer than recovering from natural birth and you also need to take several precautions and get lots of rest to regain your strength. Here are 5 tips to ensure you get healthy sooner after a caesarean birth.

 Don’t Push Yourself Just Yet

Caesarean delivery is major abdominal surgery, so you will need to spend 3 to 4 days in hospital. Once you get home, you need to get as much rest as possible so that your body can heal. Even simple tasks like having a bath or getting dressed can be exhausting. Once you get home, stay in bed and get as much rest as you can. And remember, don’t lift anything heavy just yet; you can risk tearing open the incisions. Stay hydrated, eat healthy and get plenty of rest.

 Get The Support You Need

Since you will need to rest to regain your strength, let someone else handle household chores. While you can spend time with the baby when both of you are resting, it’s not advisable to handle all the care for the baby yourself just yet. Let daddy help, or ask a family member to stay with you for a couple of weeks, so that you can rest more and recover sooner.

 Don’t Overeat at Meals

Most new moms feel ravenously hungry after a natural birth. However, since you had to undergo caesarean delivery to give birth to your baby, its best to avoid heavy meals just yet. Your digestive system may be feeling the strain of abdominal surgery, so eat more of light, nourishing foods like soups, yogurt, whole grains, fruits and vegetable and avoid rich, fatty foods.

 Postpone a Relaxing Soak

Lochia or vaginal bleeding is normal post birth. Your healthcare provider will advise you to use sanitary pads instead of tampons because you don’t want to risk infection just yet. And while a relaxing soak in the tub can feel like just what you need to soothe all your aching muscles, its best to avoid it until your incisions have healed. Try to keep the stitches dry. Also, don’t have sex until your doctor tells you it is safe to do so.

 Seek the Help You Need

Giving birth to a baby can be overwhelming for many new mothers, especially when you have a caesarean birth. Give yourself time for the experience to sink in and don’t fret if you are feeling too tired to spend quality time with the baby just yet. Talk to your loved ones if you’re feeling depressed. In case you experience sudden intense pains, bleeding from the incision site, high fever and a rash, contact your doctor immediately.
