Stay Away From Regular Birth Control Pills

According to the reports available with Indian Health Ministry, nearly a million of women in the country resort to birth control pills as a method of contraception. But, considering the potential health risks associated with this, there’s also a growing level of aversion towards it. Though, physicians believe oral contraception is the most ideal form of birth control (if taken correctly), they are also talking about the common side-effects of consuming the pills.

Take a look here to know more about the consequences you might face while living on oral contraception.

Intermenstrual Spotting

This is one of the most common side effects of birth control pill and nearly 50% of women using this have experienced the same. Intermenstrual spotting is nothing but vaginal bleeding between expected periods. It is also known as breakthrough bleeding, which is commonly experienced within the first 3 months of the starting of taking pills. However, this side effect gets resolved gradually. During the spotting, the pill is effective, but if you experience heavy bleeding for three consecutive days, see your doctor immediately. Intermenstrual spotting mainly happens when your body needs to get adjusted to different levels of hormones.

Breast Tenderness

Birth control pills often result in breast enlargement or tenderness. Though, this side effect gets resolved within a few weeks of continuing with the pill, some women tend to face difficulty with the sudden tenderness of their breast. Fear doubles up, if there’s lump in the breast with persistent pain. Get in touch with your doctor at the earliest, if you face this situation. Also wear a supportive bra to deal with the tender and saggy breast.

Most of the women experience mild nausea while starting on birth control pills. But, nausea is not necessarily an important side effect of oral contraception. However, nausea triggered due to this usually subsides within a short period of time. Take the pill during bedtime or with food to reduce the likelihood of nausea. Seek medical help for severe nausea, as this can be a warning sign of some other disease.

Headaches are another major birth control pill side effect. Since, sex hormones have an awesome effect on the headaches (like migraines), starting on the pills (that upsets the hormonal balance of your body) may result in various headache symptoms.

Weight Gain

Though clinical studies do not support any close connection with weight fluctuations and birth control pills, many women experience unusual weight after starting on the pills. However, oral pills often result in fluid retention in the body which cause weight gain.

Missed Period

Oral contraception is not likely to affect the period cycle, but women on contraceptive pills often experience this due to hormonal abnormalities. However, this is not something you should worry about.

Mood Swings

Hormonal imbalance that’s triggered by pills often results in mood swings. Some people often faced mood swings and depression as they start on taking pills. But, if you already have a history of depression and the condition gets worse after taking the pills, contact your health care provider for advice.

Decreased Libido

The hormones in the oral contraceptive pill can affect the libido in some women. As a result, they might experience a decreased libido. If the situation persists for a longer period of time, consult with your doctor. Decreased libido is often associated with premenstrual syndrome, endometriosis, unusual abdominal cramps and uterine fibroids.

Unusual Vaginal Discharge

Birth control pills affect the process of vaginal lubrication. As a result, women on oral contraception can experience unusual vaginal discharge at any point of time. This will affect the sexual intercourse in most women. While an increase in this discharge makes sex comfortable and abrupt discharge does just the opposite. Vaginal discharge is not typically harmful, but make sure that the symptom does not persist for a longer period of time. Speak with your doctor in such case.

And Finally…

The process of birth control with oral contraception has its own set of advantages and disadvantages. But, staying abreast about the side effects of birth control pills help you avoid several undesirable complications in the long run.
