Ear aches are frustrating. The pain, whether, it’s dull, penetrating, sharp or piercing can give you a thousand of reasons to worry because such pains often turn serious. However, an ear ache in most cases is the result of bacterial and viral infection, which usually affect children more than the adults. Among the possible causes of ear infection, the development of acute otitis media (AOM) in the middle ear is the most common one. The other triggers include sinus infections, earwax, tonsillitis and many more. But, the good news is there are effective home remedies to fight ear infection and in most cases these potions offer a long term solution.

Salt

It’s one of the most effective and readily available home remedy for infection related ear aches. Heat a cup of salt on a pan or you can microwave it for a few seconds. Place the hot salt in a cloth and tie a knot in the open end. Now, put that cloth on the infected ear for 10 to 15 minutes at a stretch. Repeat this remedy as many times as required. Within a week, the pain is expected to subside. The heat is supposed to drain out fluid and relieve swelling and pain.

Basil

Basil leaves are considered a magic potion for several ailments. From minor cuts and aches to chronic infections, basil leaves can provide effective remedy to everything. For ear aches triggered by viral infection, basil leaves work as a pain reliever. To prepare the potion, crush the leaves to extract the juice. Apply it in an around the infected ear, but make sure that the juice is not going inside. Alternatively, you can also soak a blend of basil oil and coconut oil (carrier oil) and use that cotton to gently wipe inside the ear. Continue this twice daily for a week.

Olive Oil

Warm olive oil is effective in reducing the symptoms of infection caused by earwax. The fungal or bacterial growth inside the ear can leads to a blockage in the Eustachian tubes. Pour a few drops of warm oil into the infected ear. The oil will soften the wax and thus it will be easier to take it out with a swab. But, don’t put the swab too far , else it will damage the eardrum. You can also use warm mustard oil for the entire process.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar is highly effective in treating ear infection. Mix equal amount of vinegar and water to prepare the potion. You can even use alcohol instead of water. Soak cotton ball in the mixture and place the ball like a plug in your ear. Leave it for 5 minutes and then lay down on the opposite side to allow the liquid drain out from your ear. This will cure the infection and relieves swelling. Use white vinegar, if apple cider vinegar is not readily available. Gargling with apple cider vinegar can relieve blockage if it’s in Eustachian tubes.

Onion

The medicinal benefits of onion for treating ear infection is amazing. Chop an onion into few small pieces and microwave it for few seconds. Now squeeze the juice from the warm onion and pour two to three drops in the infected ear. After 5 minutes turn your head to drain the excess fluid out of your ear. You can also bake the onion and put it in a cotton cloth to use it on the infected ear. It will give relief from that excruciating pain and reduce the effects of infection. Repeat the process twice a day for several weeks to get a long term benefit.

These remedies are highly effective in treating viral or bacterial ear infection. Using these for a week will surely relieve your pain, but if the condition does not improve in a week, visit your doctor immediately.
